Your mind is your biggest asset, your best skill and your strongest enemy

I’d like to start out by thanking each and everyone of you who read my first blog last week. I received several comments, positive and negative, and all feedback is welcome.

Your mind is your biggest asset, your best skill and your strongest enemy.

Our mind is the most powerful asset we have, if we use it right, take care of it right, feed it, clean it every now and then, anything is possible. In business, we can measure someone’s assets based on their attitudes. Bill Zanker, started his company, The Learning Annex (adult education school), with as much as $5,000. He realized that money is not an excuse, and that in order to grow, he needed to make some investment in marketing, so he went ahead and persuaded Donald Trump to speak at one of his events, whom he had to pay exactly as much as his company was worth at the time! That’s believing, that’s a mind that thinks big and it’s worth a lot!

I remember reading a few years back a running advertising sign that said “When my body can’t go any more, my mind takes over”. Your mind is your best skill, not because it tells you how to run, but because it holds you together, it persuades you to keep going, to push yourself further and ask yourself for more. If you can teach your mind to believe that you can do more, control it to stay focused and set aside any boundaries, I assure you that you will become better. I know that we hear this all of the time, but I’m still surprised to see that most people hear it, believe it, and don’t put it into action! If Michael Jordan didn’t believe that he could be the best, there is no way that he would’ve become the best. This is why when his coach cut him off the team, he went ahead and started training extra hours, shooting more free throws, dribbling in the dark because the gym was already closed. He then went ahead and proved everyone wrong, won 6 titles and became the best basketball player that the world has ever seen. That is a mind with amazing skills and talents.

Why do I say your mind is your strongest enemy? Because opposite to what I just talked about, your own mind will beat you down to your knees if you don’t train it. If you do not believe in your self, you won’t start your business because “you don’t have the money”, “it’s not the right time”, or “you have already invested too much in it”. Or next time you are playing a sport you will be scared before the game even begins, because “they are the best”, or they have “the new LeBron James“, and you surely will not break your time mark at that marathon simply because you do not believe you can. So news flash to you, if you keep doing what you’re doing, you’re going to get what you have got so far. Until you believe in yourself, train your mind to be your biggest asset, and your best skill, it will be your strongest enemy.

So get out there, start your business today, start believing that you can today, picture yourself being successful, picture yourself winning that competence, and fight with your mind when it tells you that you are tired, or that you should strop trying, and if it insists, try some more, because the most successful people that you ever heard about had to fight their minds too, and when you prove yourself that you can, you will see that nothing is impossible and that you are capable of accomplishing anything you set yourself to.

  1. Great post, Arturo! Persistence is indeed to key to success. Intelligence and connections help, but really, any entrepreneur has to be willing to fail on his or her face a few times – and lift herself up again with dignity again and again. I look forward to hearing about your future endeavors, keep up the writing!
